  1. Stop 1: Mary March Provincial Museum (Beothuk Interpretation Centre), Grand Falls-Windsor

About three-quarters of the way along this drive, a few hundred metres off the Trans-Canada in Grand Falls-Windsor. It tells the story of the Beothuk and of central Newfoundland's interior. A natural break on a long cross-island run.

Stopping here adds 0.6 km to the drive.

  2. Stop 2: Loggers' Life Provincial MuseumDetour

A reconstructed 1920s logging camp just west of Grand Falls-Windsor, a short detour off the drive. Central Newfoundland ran on the woods for a century, and this museum keeps that story. It is seasonal; check before you count on it.

Stopping here adds 4.6 km to the drive.

Before you go

These change, so we link to the people who keep them up to date.

  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province states the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is about twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. This is one of the longest drives on the site, most of it unlit two-lane Trans-Canada. If you land late at Deer Lake, consider breaking the trip rather than pushing on after dark.

  • Road conditionsYear round, matters most November–April

The Trans-Canada across the interior has long unserviced stretches and gets winter weather well after the coasts have cleared. Check conditions before leaving the airport.

Renting a car? Book the car when you book the flight.

Summer rentals sell out, says NL Tourism, and in June 2026 BNN Bloomberg reported St. John's airport agencies booked for nearly all of summer.

Both checked October 7, 2026.

Questions

How far is Lewisporte from Deer Lake airport?+

About 276 km. You take the Trans-Canada (Route 1) east most of the way across the island, then Routes 340 and 341 north to the bay.

Should I fly into Deer Lake or Gander for Lewisporte?+

Gander is much closer: about 63 km against 275 from Deer Lake. Choose Deer Lake only if you are seeing the west coast (Gros Morne, Corner Brook) first and working east.

Is it a hard drive?+

No. It is paved the whole way and it is the main road across the province, so it is well travelled. It is just long. Plan around arriving after dark: see the moose note above.
