360.3 km. Deer Lake airport to Twillingate: east across the island on the Trans-Canada, then north on Route 340 over the causeways to the islands.

Gander airport is the closer airport, at 113.8 km. This drive suits a trip that starts on the west coast and works east.

Break it at Grand Falls-Windsor for its two museums, then take the Route 340 turn north for the bay.

The ice is half the season. Between May and September what the province calls the world’s largest population of humpback whales — ten thousand of them, on its own count — moves through these waters, and Twillingate is one of the shore-viewing spots the province names.
