  1. Stop 1: Joey's Lookout

A mapped viewpoint on the Trans-Canada, about three-quarters of the way along and effectively on the road. OpenStreetMap records only the name and that it is a viewpoint. It is easy to miss at highway speed.

Stopping here adds 0.1 km to the drive.

  2. Stop 2: Silent Witnesses MemorialDetour

A memorial on Route 1 outside Gander, near the far end of this drive, unveiled in 1990 for the lives lost in the Arrow Air crash of 12 December 1985. An American soldier stands atop a rock holding the hands of a civilian boy and girl, each child carrying an olive branch for the Screaming Eagles' peacekeeping mission in the Sinai; they were going home for Christmas. The trio look toward Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where a similar statue looks back.

394.7 km. St. John’s airport to Lewisporte: Route 40 out of the city, the Trans-Canada past Clarenville, through Terra Nova and Gander, then north on Routes 340 and 341 to the water.

Know this first. The same town is 63 km from the Gander terminal, and this drive passes through Gander about four-fifths of the way along. It suits a trip that starts on the Avalon and works west afterward.

Before you go

These change, so we link to the people who keep them up to date.

  • Provincial parksSeasonal — typically late spring into the fall

Notre Dame is an operating provincial park with dates that move year to year; ParksNL publishes them park by park.

    gov.nl.ca →
  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province says the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. This is 395 km of mostly unlit two-lane highway, so an afternoon landing can finish in the dark in any season.

    gov.nl.ca →
  • Road conditionsYear round, matters most November–April

Most of this is the Trans-Canada, paved and well travelled. But it crosses 395 km of open country with real winter weather, and conditions at one end say little about the other. Check before leaving the airport.

Renting a car? Book the car when you book the flight.

Summer rentals sell out, says NL Tourism, and in June 2026 BNN Bloomberg reported St. John's airport agencies booked for nearly all of summer.

Both checked October 7, 2026.

Arriving without a car

Not renting? Here's who St. John's International Airport Authority lists at the terminal.

Rideshare: it depends who you ask.

The Airport Authority's own ground-transportation pages name City Wide Taxi as “the exclusive provider of ground transportation services for the public” and do not mention rideshare anywhere. Uber publishes pickup instructions for YYT, and the Airport's own account welcomed Uber in 2024. Both are true. The Authority's pages govern the kerb, so check them on the day.

  • Taxi

City Wide Taxi, which the Airport Authority names as the exclusive provider for the public. Cabs queue outside the Arrivals area and a dispatcher is there to help. The Authority publishes preset fares to named hotels and a meter-plus-surcharge rate everywhere else.

    (709) 722-7777

  • Public transit

Metrobus route 14 runs between the airport and the St. John's metro region, including Memorial University. There are two stops at the airport: one near the arrivals area, and one on World Parkway by the Holiday Inn Express. The Authority says Metrobus has committed to a wheelchair-accessible service on this route and can take large, non-folding mobility aids. Schedule and fares are Metrobus's.

Questions

How far is Lewisporte from St. John's Airport?+

About 395 km. Route 40 takes you out of St. John's to the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1), which carries most of the drive, and Routes 340 and 341 bring you the last of the way into Lewisporte.

Should I fly into St. John's, Gander or Deer Lake for Lewisporte?+

Gander, by far. Lewisporte is 63 km from the Gander terminal, against 395 km from St. John's and 276 km from Deer Lake. Fly into St. John's for Lewisporte only if you are starting on the Avalon Peninsula anyway and working your way west.

Is the drive from St. John's to Lewisporte a hard one?+

Not difficult, but long. It is paved the whole way and mostly Trans-Canada. The length is the problem, and finishing in the dark: see the moose note above.

Is there anywhere worth stopping on the way?+

Four places, and three of them come in the last stretch near Gander: Joey's Lookout on the Trans-Canada, the Silent Witnesses Memorial outside Gander, the North Atlantic Aviation Museum in the town itself, and Notre Dame Provincial Park near the end.
