The story
“The Town of Lewisporte says the arena is named for Mike Austin of Lewisporte, known locally as ‘Awesome Mike’ — an athlete who, living with permanent physical and intellectual disabilities, has won over 200 medals at local, provincial and national level. The Town lists three golds at the 2003 Special Olympic Winter Games in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a gold and a silver at the 2010 Special Olympic Games in London, Ontario, and a gold and a bronze at the 2014 Vancouver Special Olympics. It says he is a fixture at hockey games here, a fiercely competitive slo-pitch, mixed bowling and floor hockey player, and the holder of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the key to the town.”

    The Town runs a six-lane five-pin bowling centre with an event room, and says it closes from the middle of May until September — which makes it a winter-season thing in a town whose rink runs the same months.

    The town's festival, which the Town says has run for forty years. Held at the Lewisporte Recreation Complex on Bowater Avenue, the same street as the arena.

    9–11 September 2027 expected, based on past years. Confirm with Town of Lewisporte before you travel.

    The Town says over 80 exhibitors selling handmade crafts, woodworking, jewellery, paintings and home improvement. There is an admission charge, with weekend and daily passes; the Town's page has this year's price.
