Faded lines are other drives from St. John's International into this area: Clarke's Beach (88 km), Brigus (75 km), Witless Bay (46 km), Ferryland (86 km), Harbour Grace (108 km). Each splits off where its line leaves this one.

  1. Stop 1: Father Duffy's Well

A roadside spring right on the route, named for Father James Duffy, appointed first parish priest of St. Mary's in 1834, who spent the years after walking back and forth to the courthouse in St. John's over a dispute with the local merchant's agent. The legend, as Product of Newfoundland tells it, is that on one of those walks he tapped a rock with a branch and water rose from dry ground. It has run ever since. The Knights of Columbus made it a roadside grotto in the 1930s.

Stopping here adds 0.1 km to the drive.

  2. Stop 2: Butter Pot Provincial ParkDetour

The drive runs along this park's boundary, but the park reaches well inland. ParksNL calls Butter Pot one of the most popular provincial parks in Newfoundland and Labrador. Its page lists ponds to swim, fish and paddle, sandy beaches, a campground, trails, and a view over the water from the top of Butter Pot Hill. A place to spend time, not a quick stop.

Stopping here adds 6.3 km to the drive.

68.1 km. St. John’s airport on Route 40 and the Trans-Canada, then south on Route 90, the Salmonier Line, on paved road. Father Duffy’s Well, the one heritage stop, sits right on it.

Why people come. A boardwalk trail past large natural enclosures, most of the animals having arrived injured and unreleasable. The park says it cannot promise every animal will be visible on a given visit. Butter Pot Provincial Park, back along the Trans-Canada, makes it a longer day.

Before you go

These change, so we link to the people who keep them up to date.

  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province states the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is about twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime, and that a driver can expect to encounter moose on any section of the Trans-Canada or on any secondary road. Watch most on Route 90, the Salmonier Line, the two-lane stretch through wooded country.

  • Road conditionsYear round, matters most November–April

After city and highway driving around St. John's, Route 90 runs through wooded country well away from the city. Check 511 before you leave, especially outside summer.

Renting a car? Book the car when you book the flight.

Summer rentals sell out, says NL Tourism, and in June 2026 BNN Bloomberg reported St. John's airport agencies booked for nearly all of summer.

Arriving without a car

Not renting? Here's who St. John's International Airport Authority lists at the terminal.

Rideshare: it depends who you ask.

The Airport Authority's own ground-transportation pages name City Wide Taxi as “the exclusive provider of ground transportation services for the public” and do not mention rideshare anywhere. Uber publishes pickup instructions for YYT, and the Airport's own account welcomed Uber in 2024. Both are true. The Authority's pages govern the kerb, so check them on the day.

  • Taxi

City Wide Taxi, which the Airport Authority names as the exclusive provider for the public. Cabs queue outside the Arrivals area and a dispatcher is there to help. The Authority publishes preset fares to named hotels and a meter-plus-surcharge rate everywhere else.

    (709) 722-7777

  • Public transit

Metrobus route 14 runs between the airport and the St. John's metro region, including Memorial University. There are two stops at the airport: one near the arrivals area, and one on World Parkway by the Holiday Inn Express. The Authority says Metrobus has committed to a wheelchair-accessible service on this route and can take large, non-folding mobility aids. Schedule and fares are Metrobus's.

Questions

How far is Salmonier Nature Park from St. John's airport?+

About 68 km. Route 40 out of the airport, the Trans-Canada southwest, then Route 90, the Salmonier Line, south across the Avalon Peninsula.

Should I fly into St. John's, Gander or Deer Lake for Salmonier Nature Park?+

St. John's, easily. The drive from St. John's airport is 68 km; from Gander it is 291 km, and from Deer Lake 595 km. The province describes the park as an Avalon Peninsula destination.

Is the drive difficult?+

No. It is paved the whole way, and the first leg is ordinary suburban St. John's road. Take care on Route 90, which OpenStreetMap maps as a two-lane road through wooded country (see the moose note above).

Is Father Duffy's Well worth stopping for?+

For a short roadside pause, yes: it sits right on Route 90 and costs almost no detour. Butter Pot Provincial Park, back along the Trans-Canada, is a real side trip, worth it only if you plan to spend time in the park.
