Before you go

These change, so we link to the people who keep them up to date.

  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province states the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. The drive ends on two quiet, unlit routes with few places to pull over. Leave Deer Lake in the afternoon and you drive the worst of it in the dark. Start early or break it.

  • Road conditionsYear round, matters most November–April

Route 430 runs the length of the Northern Peninsula before Routes 432 and 433 turn inland to Canada Bay, and there is no way around a closure on the last 90 km. Check the far end of the drive before you commit, not just the weather in Deer Lake.

Renting a car? Book the car when you book the flight.

Summer rentals sell out, says NL Tourism, and in June 2026 BNN Bloomberg reported St. John's airport agencies booked for nearly all of summer.

Both checked October 7, 2026.

  • Taxi

Star Taxi, which the airport calls its primary ground transportation provider, serving the whole region with wheelchair-accessible vans and accommodating service dogs. The airport advises contacting them 24 to 48 hours before you arrive.

    (709) 634-4343

Questions

How far is the drive from Deer Lake?+

351.5 km, terminal to town centre on the OSRM driving profile. Both stops on this page are on the line, adding under a kilometre between them.

Can it be done as a day trip from Deer Lake?+

Only a long one. Out and back is 703 km of driving before any stops, which means finishing in the dark: see the moose warning above. Most people stay somewhere on the Northern Peninsula instead.

Is there anywhere to charge an electric car?+

Roddickton has one of NL Hydro's fast-charging sites, listed at M&B Diner on Major Street. That is why this drive was measured: the town was one of only two on the island west of Clarenville with a fast charger and no measured drive reaching it. The electric page compares every site and the routes that pass them.

Which airport should I fly into?+

Deer Lake, by a wide margin. Gander is roughly twice as far by road, and no drive from there is measured.
