Harbours from the airports and ferries

Every named harbour on the map, from the airports and ferries

Nearest airport or ferry first. The distances to neighbours are straight lines over water, in nautical miles: the floor of any passage between them and nothing more. The map, not this site, decides what is here — a marina without a name tag is counted below, not listed.

The map also holds 13 marinas with no name tag at all, which is why they are not in this table — naming them in OpenStreetMap is the single most useful thing a sailor could do for this page. Names are printed as the map spells them. The measured routes to the harbours in this guide — Glovertown Marina, Twillingate Marina, Greenspond Harbour, Deep Cove Marina, Trinity marina, Conne River Marina, Foxtrap Marina and the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club, Long Pond, St. John's harbour — drawn from Gander (YQX).Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Few, and the map says so. The open map holds named marinas on the northeast coast and the Avalon, one on the south coast, and none near Deer Lake.

This page draws no passage and states no depth. Each harbour gets the drive from its nearest airport or ferry and the straight-line distance to its neighbours. The chart, forecast and notices are linked below.

Name a marina on the map and the page fills itself.

The harbours, and how to get there

Before you go

  • ChartsBefore any passage

The Canadian Hydrographic Service publishes the charts. This page is not a chart. The straight-line distances between harbours are the shortest any passage could be and say nothing about the water between.

    charts.gc.ca →
  • Marine forecastEvery day on the water

Environment Canada's marine forecast for the Newfoundland waters is the authority on wind and sea state. Read the area forecast, not the town forecast.

    weather.gc.ca →
  • Notices to MarinersMonthly, and as issued

The Canadian Coast Guard's Notices to Mariners carry the chart corrections and current hazards.

    notmar.gc.ca →
  • Harbour authoritiesWhere the wharf has one

Most working harbours here are federal Small Craft Harbours run by a local harbour authority. They decide who may tie up, so ask them before a visiting boat does.

    dfo-mpo.gc.ca →
  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

A harbour visit ends with a drive. The province says the chance of injury in a moose collision is about twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime.

Questions

Can this site give me a sailing route?+

No. A passage is chosen against the chart, the tide, the forecast and the boat, and no open data lets a website draw one. This page gives the harbours and the straight-line distances between them, the shortest any passage could be.

Can I contribute a passage I have sailed?+

Not yet; it is planned. It would work like the walked and ridden tracks: the original GPX from the boat, checked against its timestamps and a boat's speeds, every point over water, both ends at a harbour the map holds, trimmed to the harbour mouths. The page would show it as one boat's recorded line on one day, not a route. Send one anyway and it waits for the verifier.

Why is the west coast empty?+

Because the open map has no named marina anywhere near Deer Lake airport. Several unnamed marinas, counted above, sit on the west and south coasts; a shape with no name cannot be listed. Naming them fixes this page.

Where is Lewisporte?+

Not tagged as a marina in OpenStreetMap as of the date on this page, so not here. This site lists only what the map holds; once a mapper tags it, the next build lists it.

Every figure on this page was checked against its source on September 6, 2026.
