Then a ferry to Gaultois

The Hermitage–Gaultois crossing is mapped in OpenStreetMap in both directions (relations 13094369/13094370), and Gaultois has no road at all: the boat is the town's street. Sailings, fares and the McCallum connection change with season and vessel; check the provincial schedule pages.

276 km, then a ferry. Gander airport to Hermitage: the Trans-Canada, Route 360 south, then Route 364 to the wharf. Boat first, drive second. Check the Gaultois ferry schedule. Route 360 is a long, unlit interior road, so fuel up at the turn. Why people come. Gaultois has never had a road. The south coast once ran entirely on boats, and this is one of the last places you can still watch that system work.

Questions

Should I fly into Gander or Deer Lake for Hermitage?+

Gander: 276 km, against 409 km from Deer Lake. If you are going for the ferry, plan the boat first and the drive second.

What is Gaultois?+

An outport across the tickle with no road to anywhere, one of the last of its kind. You reach it by this crossing or by boat from McCallum further along. The ferry note above has the schedule link.

Can I take a car across?+

Gaultois has no roads, which answers most of it. The operator sets the vessel's rules; check the provincial schedule page before assuming anything.

What is the drive actually like?+

Route 360 runs south past falls and across the interior, then Route 364 turns off through the Hermitage Peninsula's hills to the coast. The road ends at salt water, at a working wharf and a boat that is somebody's only way home.
