  4. Stop 4: Fortune Head Geology Centre and light stationDetour

The start of the Cambrian, when complex life took over the rock record, is formally defined at Fortune Head, the headland past the ferry wharf. The centre in town explains it. Half a billion years, a lighthouse, and France on the horizon, all on one gravel road.

Stopping here adds 2.5 km to the drive.

Questions

Can I really take a ferry to France from here?+

Yes. Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon is France: French passport control, euro prices, and clocks half an hour ahead of Newfoundland's. The crossing from Fortune takes about an hour with SPM Ferries; check their schedule. Bring your passport.

Why is Fortune Head a big deal?+

The world's geologists fixed the global reference section for the base of the Cambrian, where complex animal life shows up in the rock, at this headland. The Geology Centre in town explains it. The cliffs are a protected reserve, so look but do not hammer.

Is this drivable as a day trip?+

No. It is 757 km of driving around whatever you came for. Frenchman's Cove is the overnight on the way down, and Grand Bank and Fortune are worth an evening. The ferry, if you take it, makes it three days.

Gander or St. John's for the Burin Peninsula?+

By road St. John's is slightly nearer, 366 km against 378 km from Gander, and the Argentia ferry nearer still, at 322 km. From Gander you get Terra Nova's park corridor and the 210 down the whole peninsula, and central Newfoundland's icebergs and trails on the same trip as France.
