  1. Stop 1: Gander Old Town SiteDetour

OpenStreetMap maps this as historic ruins: the airport settlement that stood beside the runways before the present townsite. The Town of Gander says that after the war the airport went back to civilian control and residents were moved a safe distance from the runways. Work on the present townsite began in the 1950s; the town was incorporated in 1958 and the old settlement abandoned. It is a detour at the very start of the drive.

Stopping here adds 3.6 km to the drive.

  2. Stop 2: Silent Witnesses MemorialDetour

A memorial on Route 1 outside Gander, near the start of this drive, unveiled in 1990 for the lives lost in the Arrow Air crash of 12 December 1985. An American soldier stands atop a rock holding the hands of a civilian boy and girl, each child carrying an olive branch for the Screaming Eagles' peacekeeping mission in the Sinai; they were going home for Christmas. The trio look toward Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where a similar statue looks back.

Stopping here adds 2.4 km to the drive.

Before you go

These change, so we link to the people who keep them up to date.

  • MooseYear round, worst between dusk and dawn

The province states the likelihood of injury in a moose collision is about twice as high between dusk and dawn as in daytime. Almost all of this drive is two-lane highway, Route 330 then the Trans-Canada, with long unlit stretches between communities. Plan around an evening arrival.

  • Road conditionsYear round, matters most November–April

Route 330 is short; the rest is the Trans-Canada, paved, busy and well maintained. It still crosses open country and gets real winter weather. Check conditions before leaving the airport.

Renting a car? Book the car when you book the flight.

Summer rentals sell out, says NL Tourism, and in June 2026 BNN Bloomberg reported St. John's airport agencies booked for nearly all of summer.

Both checked October 7, 2026.

Questions

How far is Clarenville from Gander Airport?+

About 147 km. Take Route 330 south out of the airport to the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1), then follow it to Clarenville.

Should I fly into St. John's, Gander or Deer Lake for Clarenville?+

Gander is the closest, at 147 km. St. John's is not far behind at 191 km, a fair choice if you are landing there anyway or starting on the Avalon Peninsula. Deer Lake is 450 km and only makes sense if Clarenville is a stop on a longer west-to-east trip.

Is the drive from Gander to Clarenville a hard one?+

No. It is paved the whole way and it is the main road between the two. It is mostly two-lane highway, so plan around the moose note above, especially on an evening arrival.

Is there anywhere worth stopping on the way?+

Three, all toward the Gander end. The Gander Old Town Site is mapped as the ruins of the airport settlement that came before the present townsite. The Silent Witnesses Memorial marks the lives lost in the Arrow Air crash of December 12, 1985. Joey's Lookout is a mapped viewpoint on the Trans-Canada. Past those, the drive is highway.
