  1. Stop 1: Stephenville

The peninsula's service town, built around a runway. Harmon Air Force Base put an American town here in the 1940s, and the street names still say Texas and Georgia. Last full services before the French Shore's smaller communities.

Stopping here adds 1 km to the drive.

  2. Stop 2: Our Lady of Mercy Heritage Church

One of the largest wooden churches in Newfoundland, raised on Port au Port West's shore in the 1920s and mapped with its museum beside it. The parish and museum set their own hours in season; the building is visible from the road.

Stopping here adds 0.3 km to the drive.

  3. Stop 3: Boutte du Cap ParkDetour

The park at the end of the road, named in the Shore's French. The cliffs face across the Gulf toward Quebec, and seabirds ride the updrafts.

Stopping here adds 4.5 km to the drive.

188.1 km. Deer Lake airport to Cape St. George: the Trans-Canada, then Route 460 through Stephenville and out along the Port au Port Peninsula to the cape.

Make it a loop. Route 463 comes back along the north shore through Lourdes and Black Duck Brook.

Why people come. This is Newfoundland’s French Shore, the island’s only officially bilingual ground, and Route 460 ends where the cliffs drop into the Gulf.

Questions

What is the French Shore?+

The Port au Port Peninsula is the island's francophone heartland: communities settled by French fishing crews and Acadians, with bilingual road signs and a fiddle tradition of its own. Cape St. George is at the Shore's western end.

Is this the same Stephenville with the big airport?+

Yes. Harmon Field's Cold War runway still shapes the town plan, and the American street names survive. On this route Stephenville is the gateway to the peninsula.

Cape St. George or Port aux Basques — which west-coast drive?+

Port aux Basques is the longer run to the island's ferry port. This one is shorter and about culture: the French Shore, the wooden church, and cliffs facing Quebec.
